Facebook deletes marijuana pages as they do not comply to its policy.
Facebook Inc. is striving hard to make a difference with its services around the globe. It is deleting the pages belonging to medical marijuana dispensaries situated in New Jersey and other states where they are legally allowed, as reported by NJ.com.
Representatives from Compassionate Sciences Alternative Treatment Center along with Breakwater Wellness and Treatment Center situated in Cranbury told the NJ.com that the pages of these organizations have been removed. So when these organizations tried to log in to them, the following message flashed on the screen stating, "We remove any promotion or encouragement of drug use."
All the dispensaries of medical marijuana situated in places like New Jersey are present as per a legal grey area. Basically the situation is quite complex since marijuana is legal by the state but is actually illegal according to the federal government since the authorities consider it to be Schedule 1 drug. On the other hand, the administration of Obama’s government has refused to dig into those dispensaries that comply with the state laws.
General Manager of Compassionate Sciences, Mr. Michael Nelson, acknowledged NJ.com that Facebook is "incredibly important because the state limits what we can do on our website.” He further added, "It allows us to post strain names which allows people to do research. It allows the communication between the patients about what is working."
The aforementioned website seized the opportunity to speak to 5 dispensaries situated in New Jersey who had reported about their Facebook pages being deleted. It was deduced that the dispensary owners were extremely agitated and had voiced their concerns on multiple social platforms.
The stance taken by Facebook might simply not be related to the legal laws of marijuana, but as per Facebook’s page regarding their advertisement policies, the company will not accept any advertisements that in any way "promote the sale of prescription pharmaceuticals."
Facebook‘s spokesperson registered comments to Business Insider by stating that the pages have been removed since they did not adhere to the company’s Community Standard which clearly highlights what is allowed and what isn’t on the social media platform.
Hence the efforts taken by the company are not concerning the legality of marijuana but the company policies. When it has already highlighted that the policy does not allow the users to regulate any such content that promotes the retail of prescription pharmaceutical, then the regulators should not do so.
All advertisers need to read the policy of the company before they start to market their products on the platform to avoid any inconvenience. So now Facebook users, no marijuana pages for you folks!
