Ford utilizing On-Star like Telematics

Ford is back on deal with Microsoft for the cloud services to be provided to the customers. Previously ditching Microsoft over Sync not working so well, it has now shaken hands with the software giant again. According to the latest Ford news, the company is inspired by Lincoln and might be on the path towards introducing OnStar-like telematics services by the next year. The software giant shall be providing the cloud computing services, by allowing “customers to interact with their [Ford] vehicles and stay connected at all times.”
Currently, Ford Sync is offering fundamental connect services via USB Cable or Bluetooth with your phone. If your car has crashed or met an accident, the car uses the phone to call for help. OnStar does the same but charges $20 - $35 per month. The embedded telematics modem costs aren’t that overpriced, therefore, the company has decided to go for it, along with the deal with Microsoft.
2015 has brought Microsoft and Ford Motor company together in a deal, the latter’s plans for the year is powerful and positive. The relation of Sync and your smart phone is there to stay, maybe not forever. Whenever the Wi-Fi is accessible, Ford can use it provides updates and any information worth delivering. Butler who is the current executive director of connected vehicles and services at Ford said: — “You can expect us to have embedded [telematics] on our cars as we go forward.”
Ford motors will be using embedded telematics in order to track the health of the car, in any emergency case, the customer will be notified regardless of the fact whether the customer has paid or not.
The blog post by Microsoft revealed that both the companies’ joint venture will provide cloud services to the owners of Ford and Lincoln. A cloud computing network will be created over Microsoft Azure named Ford Service Delivery Network. “Preparing for the ownership experience of the future, Ford will enable new ways for its customers to interact with their vehicles and stay connected at all times,” the Microsoft’s blog post read.
It is observed that the most ideal way to stay connected all the time is with the help of telematics being used. On and off smart phone connection won’t do the job. Therefore, Ford’s approach can be names as a multi-tier one; smart phone for now, embedded and Wi-Fi in the future times. This is a powerful approach as BMW has claimed for driver-less vehicles and has presented one recently as well.
